The Secret to Smart Antiquing: 5 Essential Tips to Consider

In recent years, antiquing has morphed from a hobby into a way of life for many. In a lot of locations all over the world, there are organizations completely devoted to the activity of finding antiques, collecting them for their home, or re-selling them for profit.

As fun as antiquing may be for a lot of people, one cannot disregard that there are downsides to it. First, it is costly because you have to buy antiques and they are not always finds from flea markets or yard sales. Secondly, the collection just continues to grow especially when you end up falling in love with pieces you purchase and do not want to sell.

It is for such reasons that veteran antiquers say that most of them have homes that look straight out of the TV show “Hoarders.” But, with the smart management of this hobby or lifestyle, antiquing remains a completely pleasurable activity. So, what is the secret to proper antiquing?

●      There should be an established place for finds

You must always bear in mind that antiques require good storage so they can maintain their value if you do not intend to use or display the pieces right away. Some people have a massive garage for their finds but big-time antiquers place their antiques in storage facilities.

A regular on-site storage unit will suffice for items that are not climate-sensitive. However, for painting and luxurious goods, it is best to find storage units which are temperature-controlled.

Renting a storage unit is the best option for truly valuable antiques. Not only will they be kept well, but you can be sure of their safety because storage facilities have state-of-the-art and/or multi-level security systems.

●      Cleaning is a must

You will continue to take delight in your finds if you keep them clean. Most antiquers even find that taking the time to clean their purchased antiques is always an opportunity to discover creative ways to incorporate their antiques into their home or office.

If you have a massive collection that you keep at home, though, hire a professional cleaning service or part-time helpers to assist you with the task. You will not only get the job done faster but better as well because professional cleaners use the best cleaning techniques and equipment.

●      Display your antiques

There’s no greater joy in finding rare and old pieces than seeing them in their full glory. A lot of antiquers simply store their collection. But if you are a true lover of old things, your hobby will have greater meaning if you display the fruits of your quests.

Visit social media sites like Pinterest and Instagram to learn different ways on how to decorate your home with antiques or how to display them beautifully. Porcelain plates or China, for example, look gorgeous as wall decor. Ditto with Persian rugs. Meanwhile, delicate pieces like glass figurines deserve to have their own display cases. The same goes for posters, postcards and other paper items.

Here’s a special tip when it comes to displaying antiques: think about the seasons. Not necessarily to make the display align with the season but simply to switch things up, especially if you a big collection of antiques.

Also, consider hiring an interior decorator to determine the most creative ways of working your pieces into the look of your home or office.

●      Come up with alternative uses for your antiques

If you have old items that you do not mind using, come up with unexpected uses for them. For example, you can turn antique picture frames into fancy jewelry holders. Or, use antique keys as necklace pendants or charms for a shabby chic curtain holder. They’ll bring new beauty and value to other items in your home.

●      Create a document for them

You are preserving a “piece of time” when you buy and collect antiques. So, it is important to collect information about every piece, not only to remind you of their actual value but also to make the activity more purposeful.

Do some background research, and find the story behind each antique piece you collect. This way, your collection will not only be valuable for being antique, but also because each piece has a priceless story or anecdote behind it.

There you go — the secret to antiquing. If this is a hobby you want to get into, these are some of the things you should do to get it right so it becomes an activity you can always get great joy from.
